Autonomous Audi TTS Pikes Peak

The autonomous Audi TTS built by Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Lab, Stanford University and Audi has taken an important first step toward its ultimate goal: participating in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The self-driving TTS officially completed a test run – all the way to the 14,110 foot summit – earlier this year, clocking a time of 27 minutes, which is pretty good considering that race officials typically expect a human driver to do it in around 17 minutes.
12.42 miles uphill, with no driver behind the wheel. This is the achievement of the first autonomous vehicle built by an established manufacturer, the Audi TTS. And even if it didn't set a record when it comes to speed, it certainly managed to impress through its actions.

Vintage Grudge Match: The Cheetah returns to take on those pesky Cobras

Ford versus Chevy. To many red-blooded Americans, the battle lines are as clear as good versus evil or Rocky versus Ivan Drago. We're not taking sides here, but we will remark that its a tad bit surprising that so many remember the Shelby Cobra with such fervor without noting a few of the more interesting competitors powered by engines from the Bowtie brand... like Zora Arkus-Duntov's classic Corvette Grand Sports and the Cheetah. Right, the Cheetah.
As much as we love the aforementioned Cobra – which is to say a whole heck of a lot – allow us to go on record as saying that the Don Edmunds-designed, Bill Thomas-marketed 1964 Cheetah is one of the most beautiful shapes in the history of American automotive racing. See for yourself in the high-res photo gallery below. Unfortunately, a fire at the factory assembling the Cheetah in 1965 ended the car's production after just 23 cars were built.

All was not lost. A company called Cheetah Continuation Turnkey Collectibles in Arizona is building a series of continuation cars authorized by Bill Thomas himself. Prices start at $88,500, which nets the buyer a space frame chassis with fully independent suspension, a 350 cubic-inch Chevy V8 with dual quads mated up to a Muncie M-20 four-speed transmission and a hand-laid fiberglass body built to the same specifications as the original car. Now... to pick a color.

How to Clean Your Engine Compartment

Engines run cooler and more efficiently when a thick film of crud doesn’t interfere with heat transfer। This is especially important with modern engines that operate hotter in more compact engine compartments. Clean engines make it easier to see oil, automatic transmission and coolant leaks and monitor the condition of drive belts. Dirt and dust also can cause premature wear of components and belts. And it’s much more pleasant to make repairs in a clean engine compartment. If you need just one more reason to keep your engine spotless, consider that keeping engines free of oil and fuel-soaked gunk goes a long way toward preventing underhood fires.

1400 HP 10.4 liter twin-turbo V8 from Nelson Racing Engines

The SEMA show has brought us an infinity of custom goodies and some of these are more special than others. We’re here to zoom in on a creation that can literally move mountains: a powerplant that comes from Nelson Racing Engines.
We are talking about a V8 unit with a displacement of 10.4 liters, which uses a twin-turbo setup to deliver 1,420 hp and 1,400 lb-ft (1,896 Nm) of torque... on pump gas. Curious to see what happens when you fill the tank with race juice?

The output explodes to 2,332 hp and 2,100 lb-ft (2,844 Nm), a value that requires a rock-solid transmission.

The monstrous powerplant can be yours for $52,000 (EUR32,200 at the current exchange rates). In case you’re wandering is this is one of those projects that only sounds good on paper, we have to tell you that the company has a strong reputation for building monsters like this.

Chevy Silverado on 32-Inch Forgiato Wheels [Video]

Custom cars in Florida are in a league of their own. They guys will take any old sedan out there and put on the largest wheels you’d never think would fit. And in fact they don’t fit, because parts of the fenders and bumpers have to be shaved off to maker room.
This odd looking Fred Flintstone used to be a regular old Chevy Silverado pickup, an American legend in the making. The guys at Dynasty Customs in Tampa Bay fitted it with new 32-inch ENZO wheels from Forgiato. These have huge chrome rims and massive lips.

The custom truck also has tinted lights, chrome mirrors and a brand new grille, not to mention a banging sound system. All these mods have the potential of adding at least $10,000 to the price tag, so it’s quite serious business, even though it looks like a clown car.

Chicago 2011: Lexus CT 200h by Five Axis sneaks into the Windy City

Yes, it is indeed a bit odd that Lexus chose to show off a tuned version of its CT 200h hatchback at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. Generally speaking, such machines are reserved for events more along the lines of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Still, here we are in the Windy City and there's this Five Axis-tuned hybrid on the stage; we couldn't help but shoot it for your viewing pleasure.
In addition to the custom widebody kit, this CT 200h wears a unique coat of paint and features a lowered suspension courtesy of Tein along with upgraded brakes from Stoptech. Want to see more? Check out the gallery of live images below... and do try to overlook the horrible lighting afflicting the Lexus stage in Chicago.

Lincoln MKC Concept

Ford's efforts to resuscitate its moribund Lincoln luxury brand began in earnest with the introduction of its 2014 MKZ sedan, a model many labeled as the marque's make-or-break offering. Of course, one model does not a comeback make, and with the MKZ just now starting to trickle into dealers, it will be some time before America's jury of consumers comes in with their judgment.
More to the point, it's likely to take better than a decade's worth of products and sustained marketing effort to even begin to figure out whether Lincoln has a shot at redemption or if it will die of Mercury poisoning. After all, rival General Motors has been pouring resources into Cadillac since the late '90s, and if the sales charts are any guidance, it's still probably too early to declare its rebirth a success.

Would a Mustang-based Lincoln look like this?

Designer Josiah LaCalla has taken a stab at what a Ford Mustang-based Lincoln model might look like with the Continental Mark X1 concept. Make no mistake, Ford's luxury arm has made it abundantly clear that it won't be pursuing any new products outside of volume models, which means a flashy halo grand tourer like the one you see here isn't in the cards. LaColla used the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG as a basis for his creation, which explains the long nose, but we certainly don't mind the idea of a rear-wheel drive Lincoln with a cabin pushed to the aft.
While we're dreaming, there's certainly nothing stopping us from imagining what's under that lengthy hood. We like the idea of the 5.8-liter supercharged V8 from the Shelby GT500 pushing the Mark X1 down the road, but how about something a little more inventive? Something like a high-revving, buttery V12 with enough torque to push the contraption well past 200 miles per hour. Dream a little dream, people.

Gran Turismo Awards crowns Best of Show from SEMA, will include in game

Part of the blinged-out pomp and circumstance that surrounds SEMA is the presentation of the Gran Turismo Awards, which recognizes best car design and innovations in six categories, as well as an overall Best in Show. This year's winner was David Eckert and his 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 40, which also won the award for Best Hot Rod.
Other winners included the Toyota DragQuoia for Best Truck/SUV, the 2013 Ford Mustang RTR for Best Domestic Car, the Scion Evasive FR-S for Best Asian Import and the 500-horsepower VWVortex Super Beetle won for best European Import.

But it was the Mach 40 that apparently captured the interest of judges, which included Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi. David Eckert's team created a clever combination of Mustang Mach 1 styling and massive power, using the powertrain from the Ford GT. That means this 'Stang was fitted with a mid-mounted supercharged 5.4-liter V8, producing 600 to 850 horsepower, modulated using an "adjustable horsepower dial." Interestingly, the custom project rides on a C6 Corvette suspension.

The notoriety of the Mach 40 will last well after this year's show, as the car is being included in the Gran Turismo franchise, and will be seen by the millions that play the popular driving simulator. You may never get to drive the Mach 40, but now you may know what driving this car feels like in virtual reality, which for the David Eckert's team, must feel pretty darn cool.

RK Concepts custom motorcycles look ready for Rod Serling

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension – a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... the SEMA Zone.
With apologies to fans of The Twilight Zone, we couldn't help but recite those iconic opening lines when we happened upon these RK Concepts custom motorcycles here at the SEMA Show. The fact that these crazy two- and three-wheeled machines sit in a prominent position right outside the main auditorium certainly doesn't hurt the impression they make on showgoers.

There are five concepts above: The RK S, RK Spring Frame, RK Chain, RK Thing and one more that doesn't seem to have a name but features a frame that's almost completely round. We don't really have words to describe them, other than to say that the designer, Rafik Kaissi, swears each of them can indeed be ridden. Check them all out in our high-res gallery above.

NEW ALFA ROMEO TZ3 CORSA CONCEPT UNVEILED AT VILLA D'ESTE

The Zagato-designed Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa has been unveiled at the Villa D'Este concours, and frankly, it's spectacular. Driven by the Alfa 8C Competizione's V8, the TZ3 is very much in keeping with its 60s-era predecessors, the TZ1 and TZ2, sporting similar detail elements and the same near-breadvan profile. Also like the originals, this is a legit racing car. Unlike its forbears, however, the new machine wears aluminum bodywork stretched over a tube frame and carbon-fiber chassis. Power, as indicated before, is also of thoroughly modern origin.
Zagato says the TZ3 was commissioned by German collector Martin Kapp as a special celebration of 100 years of racing from Scuderia Ferrari, Alfa Corse, Autodelta, and Scuderia Zagato. On that "special" bit, we think it's safe to say, "mission accomplished" - with class and panache to spare. Official PR pics are in the gallery below, and a full live gallery is posted at OmniAuto. Be sure to pay them a visit as well.

DeltaWing Indycar concept

As we speak, the IZOD IndyCar series is looking over a number of proposals for the next generation of open-wheel racecars. One of those, the design from Dallara, has already been shown. Today at the Chicago Auto Show, DeltaWing pulled the covers off its design proposal, and the machine looks completely different from anything we've yet seen circling the Brickyard.
At first glance, a couple of interesting features jump out, not the least of which are the giant vertical rear wing and super-skinny front track. The cars also seem much longer than current Indycars, though we'd need to see the two machines next to one another to come to any real conclusions on the matter.

In any case, DeltaWing has a pretty radical design on its hands. Plus, Chip Ganassi Racing's Ben Bowlby, who formerly led design at Lola, is behind the effort. See for yourself in our high-res image gallery below and make the jump for an animated video of the DeltaWing buzzing around Mid-Ohio.

Custom 1957 Chevy is the ultimate 1589 horsepower sleeper

As we walked among the custom hot rods and muscle cars of the Grand National Roadster Show this past weekend, there was one particular car that caught our eye. It wasn't so much the exterior of the '57 Chevy that commanded our attention, although the two-tone silver and gray paint job did look quite attractive.
It was more the massive dual turbos lurking underneath the hood that causes us to walk over and take a closer look. What we discovered was one heck of a sleeper. In fact, the car is actually nicknamed "57 Sleeper" by its owner, Tim Kerrigan, founder of Red Line Oil. Built by Dominator Street Rods of Tracy, CA, this '57 Chevy is packing a twin-turbo, 540ci V8 with... drum roll please...1589 horsepower and 1508 pound-feet of torque. The car is built on an Art Morrison chassis and features other goodies like Wilwood brakes, custom 3-inch headers, and Schott Performance wheels.

DC Design one-off Rolls Royce is up for sale

Indian styling house DC Design created this one-off Rolls Royce four years ago, a car with Enzo-style doors that will surely turn a lot of heads, huge wheels and other styling changes that will make anyone wonder if that’s a Rolls Royce or a Batmobile.
The DC Design Rolls Royce looks like the result that you will get by crossing a Nissan 350Z with a Rolls Royce and it was originally created by the Indian-based design firm for a Maharajah for his private collection. Maybe he had some troubles getting used to the Enzo-style doors or maybe he thought it’s too weird for him to drive it but this unique take on Rolls Royce is now up for grabs.

The special Rolls Royce by DC Design has been listed for sale by a London-based company at 750,000 Euros ($1,176,000).

Mosler willl build just one MT900S Photon per year

There are more and more cars that can be easily placed in the high-performance and exquisiteness category. Definitely one of them is the MT900S Photon, a four wheel masterpiece built by supercar specialists from Mosler in Florida. We’d all love to own one but Mosler has recently announced they will limit the production series of MT900S Photon to just one unit for the whole 2012!!
To get you into the world of the MT900S Photon, we need to mention that it’s one of the most light-weight supercars on today’s market. Its weight of less than 2,500 pounds (fuel-included) is so low because of the carbon fiber body panels and the composite chassis.

The car gets powered by a 7.0-liter V8 coming from Chevrolet, tuned up to deliver 535 HP. This permits the supercar to reach 62 mph from a standstill in less than three seconds, and a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

In terms of looks, the car may seem a bit overage, its design having been used more than a decade ago, but the manufacturer added a few aerodynamic modifications to better the drive, plus a more contemporary kit-car-ish sensation.

The price for this particular unit coming to market is a staggering $479,000. Wouldn’t you fancy being the owner of the only Mosler MT900S Photon produced in 2012?

2012 Chrysler 300 Luxury Edition with a V6 Engine

The Chrysler 300 has been among us for some time now, with different options available and engines ranging from 2-liter 4 cylinders to the luxurious 300C powered by a 363 HP 5.7-liter Hemi V8. They’re now introducing a new version of their Luxury Edition, a V6 powered 300.

The car is propelled by the 292 HP 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that powers its regular sibling, connected to a 8-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive and optionally 4×4. Just like its bigger brother, it boasts a full-leather interior and a bunch of luxurious extras throughout.
Mainly, the V6’s interior is pretty similar to the Hemi version of the 300 Luxury Edition, with extravagant leather treatment for the central console, dashboard, armrest, steering wheel and door panels, plus lovely two-tone Mocachino or black seats, beautifully covered in Nappa leather, featuring double-mode ventilation, double-mode heat-system for both front and rear occupants and 12-way power adjustable front seats.

Apart from all these lavish leather use, we also need to mention the infotainment system with 8.4-inch LCD touchscreen and navigation system, power-adjustable steering wheel, pedals and column, dual heated/cooled cup holders, ambient lit foot well lighting, LED-illuminated instrument cluster with driver-selectable colors and interior door handles, front and rear map pockets, premium carpeted trunk mat, die-cast paddle shifters, natural Pore Mocha wood trim in matte finish and chrome door sills.

The exterior of the car boasts exterior mirror caps and door handles with platinum chrome fascia accents and 19-inch (4×4) or 20-inch polished-face (rear-wheel drive) alloy wheels. The sales of both the V6 and the Hemi V8 will start during February 2012 with manufacturer-suggested retail price of between $40,145 and $45,245, allowing us to say this is a true bargain.

Building The Engine For a Special COPO Camaro – Video

Back in October Chevrolet made a very special COPO Camaro Convertible model to be auctioned off to benefit the American Heart Association. This being a special project, GM sent Jim Campbell, vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, down to the assembly line to personally put the engine for this car together.
Assembling a 550 hp 327 V8 with a 4.0 liter supercharger looks like great fun to us, especially when it serves a good cause.

Wheelsandmore Tweaks Aston Martin DBS Carbon

Wheelsandmore, a German tuner of high-end sports cars, set about tuning the Aston Martin DBS Carbon Edition, but they quickly realized the car is pretty much perfect and there is not much they can do to improve it. Still, they tweaked a few things here and there to make the car even more desirable.
First off, they fitted the DBS Carbon with a set of new wheels. It is, after all, what Wheelsandmore does best. The DBS gets a set of 21-inch wheels finished in black to match the exterior color of this limited edition Aston. You can also opt for a version of these wheels with red outer lip and red brake calipers. The wheels are wrapped in Continental Sport Contact 5P, 265/30 front, 325/25 rear.

Other changes made to the Aston include fitment of a F1-sport air filter and a new sport exhaust system with high performance catalysts and valve system. Together they give the DBS a total output of 557 horsepower and 660 Nm of torque. The standrd car has about 520 hp and 570 Nm.

1074 hp Audi S3 by TS Racing

We knew that Audi’s, or rather Volkswagen’s, 2.5 liter five-cylinder engine has a great potential for tuning, but we didn’t know how big that potential was until we came across this. What we have here is an innocuous looking Audi S3 modified for racing by a firm called TS Racing, and it has a whopping 1074 HP (790 kW) and 1158 Nm (853 lb-ft) of torque!
Only God and a couple of his close companions know how in the world this little hatchback puts that massive power down to the ground, but it does. Actually, the more pressing question is how the hell did they manage to extract 1074 hp out of a 2.5 liter engine?

TS Racing’s Audi S3 is an amazing engineering achievement. The car also has a massive aero kit and other racing bits and bobs that are interesting, but the engine just dominates everything.
